Geography
Curaçao is a tropical island, situated in the southern part of the Caribbean Sea. The island has approximately 135.000 inhabitants. Together with Bonaire and Aruba they form the ABC islands. Curaçao is the largest of these 3 islands. Next to Curaçaothere is another island called Little- Curaçao which lies about 10 kilometers from the east coast. The highest point on the island is the Christoffelberg 375m. The island is composed of volcanic and sedimentary rock.
Curaçao has six natural ports: The largest can be found on the southwest side of the island and is known as Schottegat which is the harbor of Willemstad. It is said that this is the largest natural harbour in the world. Surrounding Schottegat is the biggest dry dock and oil refinery of the whole region as well as a container
terminal, docks and quays for the cruise boats. Schottegat can be reached via the Anna bay. The Anna bay divides Willemstad in two parts. To the east the oldest part called Punda (the Point) with lots of shops and to the west Otrabanda (The Other Side). Both parts are connected since 1886 by a wooden pontoon bridge (Queen Emma bridge). On the Ruyterkade there is a lively ‘floating market’ where Venezuelans sell goods from their boats.
Language
For a long time Dutch was the official language but since 2007 Papiamentu has also been recognized as the official language along side the Dutch language. Papiamentu is still the native tongue. Spanish is spoken also.
Climate
Throughout the year there is a tropical climate with lots of sun with an average temperature of 27°C. There is a constant breeze known as the North East Trade Wind which brings coolness. Most rain falls between the months of November till February. These are often short but heavy showers.
Time
Curaçao does not know a summer or wintertime. The difference between Dutch time and local time can be 5 to 6 hours earlier depending on the time of the year in Europe.
Nature
Along the southwest coast are a number of beautiful beaches and bays. Where good scuba diving and snorkeling spots are to be found. The north coast of the island is rugged with thorny bushes. Propelled by the northeast wind the waves hit the coast constantly with the result that interesting caves can be found there.
Because of the great diversity of the island and the lovely climate Curaçao can be counted as the ideal holiday island for everyone.
